Hi Garry, I am not good at rankings but here is something of interest.

In creating my video for the Alex Jeffreys competition where we are trying for the most video views, I did the following...

I created my video. ( The Hard Part )

I put the keywords blog and business in my title.

I put the same two keywords in my description and my tags.

In three days I was number one for the keywords blog business in Google under "videos"

I've been on top for three weeks now out of about 28,000 videos getting me a lot of hits.

All of this was on the advice of Maria Andros and it has worked wonders.

Hope this helps and keep aiming for that number one!

Hi Mark,

Well done. But which website/listing?

I've check www.markterrell.co.uk and in the UK it is listed at #22. I know results across the world seem a little different but is that the site I should be checking?

And Mark what is the 'marketingwithmark'Is that another website as I can't seem to find it.

My pleasure adding you to the Most Active Blogs Blogroll. I try to make sure the list is the top blogs and if anyone want's to be added just shout and I'll check it out.

Keep going Gazza (Sir Lancelot!)

I wanna see you at #1 buddy. You, above ALL else, DESERVE it. You are like Sir Lancelot - the white knight of the round table (LOL).

You'll see me coming up the ranks there too bro'.

Unfortunately, Google reports different results in different countries. When I was #12 in Oz yesterday, you said I was #19 in the UK. Now today you say you are #8 in the UK but I see you and me at #14 and #15 in Oz.

I will bet in the US they see different to that. I have great friends in the US and I know for a FACT that Google displays differently there to Oz coz I have been speaking with them on VOIP about a certain page and they don't see that page on the same page that I do. It is all very inconsistent and confusing.

I'm also willing to bet that Florida, New Jersey and California, where my friends live, will also display differently but there's no real benefit in me knowing that so I haven't bothered asking.

But keep going mate. Chaaaaaaaaaaaarge! LOL!

<b>**** UPDATE ON PROGRESS ****</b>

Just noticed I've moved up to number 8 in the Google search results for the word 'alex jeffreys'.

Some of the changes I have done obviously take a time to filter through to Google but I am well pleased at the steps I have taken are having the desired effective. I've just been working through the tips and techniques that are explained in the course I mentioned previously that I bought last year. It is proving to be a real gem this course but like I said before, until I signed up with AJ I really didn't know how to focus it properly. It's all coming together now :-)

Loads more stuff included in it as well so I will just keep chipping away making small steps in the right direction.

>Gary -

I'm bewildered by all of this, LOL. So your not the only one but slowly making headway.

>Q - thanks for the suggestion about CSS. But like you say I think my expert friend will tell me where to go if I try to interfere !! He knows his stuff and won't appreciate me meddling. And looking at the source you can certainly 'find an eyeful' as you put it. Now our mentor Alex did tell us to use various techniques to 'spy' on our competitors (legally of course) and that includes him ! :-)

>Mark T –

Congratulations on the booby prize, LOL. Though it does looks as they have had a massive effect on MSN. I guess you wasn't in number one position before?

Shame it doesn't seem to work on Google. I am #14 and you at #16 so we've both moved up from yesterday.

Thanks for that explanation about the 'hacking' I think the more people who throw their experience into the hat the better. Though, actually we started out discussing SEO so I'm not quite sure how we got onto hacking, LOL.

Actually, I know now - it was with the attention everyone is giving to the Google search positions we noticed something obviously wrong with Alex's site. Look forward to your post. Your explanation made a lot of sense. I guess in the end, some hackers just do it for the amusement so I suppose trying to psycho analyze their motives is doomed from the outset!!

Look forward to your post about the security. Hey and don't worry about promoting your blog. It's not as though you are pimping anything. You have something of value to say and so should advertise that fact. I will keep popping over to your site to check things out but by all means when you have something ready just drop a comment over here. I am sure you will have a lot of people who will want to pop over to your blog and have a read.

He's certainly a trusting man Alex, giving you password access to his site and you certainly must have impressed him and earned his trust. Well done and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

>Paula –

Thanks for that link. I will check it out. Thing I am concerned about is that I am on Wordpres 2.6. I dare not upgrade to 2.7 just in case it screws up my permalink structure or anything else as any sites that have links to me will all be broken. I asked about the risks of upgrading several times and no-one as confirmed whether there will be an issue or not.

Hey, just following that link I see that you are acquainted to Mark M from a while ago, even before the Alex Jeffreys course. It's a small world, even in cyber space, LOL.

Oh, and finally Paula I've just checked and I can't believe it but you are nowhere in my Blogroll. How did that happen? I'm sure you used to be. Maybe I accidently deleted you with my last big reshuffle. Sorry if that was the case :-( I'll add you back

Apart from black hat methods, some of which have already been mentioned here, the quality and quantity of backlinks to your blogs from well-ranked sites are a great way to get better ranking.

1. Submitting articles to high-ranking directories such as Ezine Articles,

2. Commenting on `do-follow' blogs,

3. Social networking and bookmarking on sites such as Delicious, Digg, Stumbleupon etc.,

4. Commenting on high-ranking forums.

These are just a few ways to spread your links across the net.

As for blog security, yes, I agree, people do tend to spend a lot more time on the front end of their blog than the backstage bit. I wrote a post on my own blog about this a little while back.

Being in he hosting business, the most common cause I see of blogs being hacked is that bloggers simply don't keep them up-to-date with the latest version, this can cause all kinds of problems, including compromising your server and being kicked off your hosting.

You can read a bit more here

Hi Gary (#55),

First of all, something like this could very well happen to anyone. Not just Alex, it just so happend that it did! :(

I know about those links right at the top of the source code, because you can view it yourself. There is no law against it, I don't know the ins and outs about having an option to view the source. </i>(All I know is that you can right-click, and View Source!)</i>

To be honest, I don't really know everything about Alex's website. He uses WordPress, and it works just like any other WP Version out there (basically!) I myself have a a couple of blogs, and so there become familiar with things happening.

Just after WordPress 2.7 was released, Alex spotted me Twittering about the fact I'd just upgraded. He called me, and explained about the problem with his blog. I don't work for him, but have sorted his blog when the 'hackers' do something to it. If I've sorted something for Alex, I <b>ALWAYS</b> tell him, which I did <a href="http://twitter.com/markmcwilliams/status/1133557281" rel="nofollow">yesterday</a> and he was very <a href="http://twitter.com/Alex_Jeffreys/status/1133990601" rel="nofollow">greatful</a> for it!

Anyway, if you want to double check anything, then I'd suggest talking to the main man himself! - I do as much to help anyone and everyone without asking for anything in return, all you need to do is ask! :D

Thanks
Mark

Garry... be sure to ask your friend about hiding stuff with CSS. You know, like hidden keywords and hidden links. Bet he'll give you an earful. If you go looking, you can find an eyeful, too, if you know what you're looking for.

Hi Mark,

Pardon me for asking such an obvious question but how do you know all that stuff? I am bewildered by your depth of knowledge of Alex's website and its internal machinations. Do you do work for him or something?

<b>@Garry (#47)</b>: This is a case where I think the word <i>'hacked'</i> is too strong. Yes, technically it has been hacked, but really just a couple of files have been editted.

If I'm being honest (And I know it sounds strange!), but having a partially hacked blog is more beneficial for what the hacker is after. Let me explain, the way things are done, means that the blog is still searchable for new content. This first of all mean that it's less noticeable, so the hacker could get away with it for a lot longer.

Now is when we get to the tricky part, or at least it's the part where I'm not 100% sure on. The reason why we you weren't being redirected to anything insurance related is becauce the hacker didn't upload cde that did that.

From what I can see, as there is many hyperlinks pointing to insurance sites. Most of the time being the same insurance site, I believe the Search Engine Bot's would decide to go spider that particular insurance site. In my eyes, it's almost like hidden backlinks from high-traffic sites.

The only reason it was spotted the first time, was because it stopped Alex from logging into his admin area. The files the hackers had uploaded were obviously conflicting with some of WordPress, and how it functions.

To sum it all up though, I see it as a potential way to gain some backlinks from the sites that the hackers target. I could be completely wrong, but all the search engines see to start with is all the insurance crap!

Regarding your second paragraph, I could probably spend all day talking about things to do. I've read so many tutorials/guides online from other people, that I think I'll write a post about it.

There are the basic's, like making sure you don't use Micky Mouse passwords. I'll make sure to link up some good atricles I've read, and I'll have the post done in a couple of days!

I don't mean to be promoting my blog in any such way, it's just I feel it'd be easier to address everyone than just visitors to your blog Garry! ;)

How does that sound?...

Thanks

Hi [Q],

Hmmmm, I get what you mean.

As for viewing source. Yes I've done that on a lot of the sites I want to learn from. In a lot of cases I understand it all but then I come across something and think - What?? Just baffles me, but I just save it in a folder and hopefully I'll be able to come back to it later with great knowledge and understand it then. I don't like to give up.

My friend though, understands everything so I'll just wait and see what hidden Google secrets he'll be able to reveal to us.

Oh, Gazza, mentioned yesterday that he couldn't view the source for Alex Jeffreys site when it was showing up as 'insurance'. Well, I worked out how to do it and that threw up some funny things I didn't understand as well - and not to do with the 'insurance' hacking either. I guess that's something else I should throw at my mate, as like I say - I like to know. It could be something that I need to be doing on my site.

Thanks for popping by Q.
